The University of Melbourne is delighted to provide Graduate Research Scholarships to eligible and exceptional students who intend to pursue a full-time Masters by Research degree or a doctoral degree at the University, with a duration of up to 3.5 years.
These scholarships are open to both domestic and international students who demonstrate high academic achievements and are undertaking a Masters by Research degree or a doctoral degree. The Graduate Research Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and provide a stipend along with a fee offset to support the recipients.

Scholarship Details:
This scholarship is applicable to all fields of study and provides a value of up to 100% fee remission. Approximately 600 applicants will be awarded scholarships with a total value of up to $110,000.
For students pursuing a Masters by Research degree, a living allowance of $34,400 per year pro rata (based on the 2023 full-time study rate) will be provided for up to two years. For students undertaking a doctoral degree, the living allowance will be provided for up to 3.5 years. The living allowance may be subject to annual indexing and includes limited paid sick, maternity, and parenting leave.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the Graduate Research Scholarships at the University of Melbourne, applicants are expected to fulfill the following criteria:
- Applicants can be domestic or international students, based on their academic merit.
- Applicants must have either applied for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne and meet the entry requirements, or be currently enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne.
Scholarship Benefits:
- Full fee offset for up to two years for students pursuing a Masters by Research degree or up to four years for students undertaking a doctoral degree.
- A living allowance of $34,400 per year pro rata (based on the 2023 full-time study rate) for up to two years for Masters by Research students or up to 3.5 years for doctoral students. The living allowance may be subject to annual indexing and includes limited paid sick, maternity, and parenting leave.
- A relocation grant of $2000 for students relocating from States or Territories other than Victoria, or $3000 for students relocating from outside Australia.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students who require a student visa to study in Australia.
Fee offset Scholarship:
Students undertaking a Masters by Research degree will receive a full fee offset for up to two years, while students pursuing a doctoral degree will receive a full fee offset for up to four years.
How to Apply:
If you are a new student and have submitted your application for a graduate research course before the application closing date, you will be automatically considered for the Graduate Research Scholarships.
In the event that you have accepted an offer for a graduate research course but deferred your commencement in order to be reconsidered for a scholarship, you must complete an online application form by 31 October to be considered for a scholarship in the following year.
For current students already enrolled in a graduate research course and seeking a scholarship, an online application form must be submitted by 31 October to be considered for a scholarship in the following year.
