The NATO Defense College Fellowship presents an excellent opportunity for international students to pursue research programs in Italy. Specifically, the college offers a total of eight fellowships each year, focusing on defense and security policy studies related to NATO and its partner nations.
The primary aim of this fellowship is to encourage the exploration of various fields through academic study and policy analysis, addressing the specific concerns of NATO member states. Additionally, it seeks to support nations participating in the Partnership for Peace (PfP), Mediterranean Dialogue (MD), and Other Military Cooperation (OMC)/Partners Across the Globe (PAG) initiatives. Since its initiation in 1993, the program has awarded a total of 109 scholarships up until 2017.

Fellowship Objectives:
The Resident Fellowship Programme aims to achieve the following specific objectives:
- Contribute to the Research Directorate’s calendar of activities by conducting research on topics that are of interest to the Alliance.
- Contribute to research efforts focused on NATO’s agenda in both NATO member countries and partner countries.
- Provide Fellows and Scholars with a valuable opportunity to learn from the NATO community, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the NATO Defense College and the experience of working in an international environment.
- Enhance understanding of NATO and the work carried out by the NATO Defense College in both NATO member and partner countries.
- Deliver lectures to the Senior Course (SC) and the NATO Regional Cooperation Course (NRCC) as needed, offering expertise on a case-by-case basis.
- Contribute to the educational activities of the NATO Defense College.
- Assist in nurturing the professional growth and development of Scholars, particularly in relation to NATO-related issues.
