Every year, the Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust awards a fellowship to a Pakistani scholar who would greatly benefit from a three-month stay at SOAS. This fellowship, hosted by the SOAS South Asia Institute, is scheduled for January to May 2024. Its purpose is to provide a rewarding opportunity for the selected scholar to enhance their academic and career pursuits.

The main goals of this three-month visiting fellowship encompass several important aspects:

  1. Enriching the Research Environment: Actively contributing to the research atmosphere of the Institute.
  2. Facilitating Collaboration: Offering members and research students of the South Asia Institute the valuable chance to collaborate with distinguished scholars from external institutions.
  3. Building Academic Connections: Establishing and nurturing connections with academic institutions in Pakistan.
  4. Promoting Collaborative Research: Facilitating joint research initiatives between Pakistani academics and colleagues from the South Asia Institute.

Expectations for the fellows during their visit include:

  1. Seminar Series Participation: Delivering a talk as part of the Institute’s seminar series.
  2. Active Engagement: Participating in the institution’s intellectual environment, including involvement in seminars.
  3. Potential Activities: Involvement in various Institute activities, such as presenting in departmental seminars or conferences, collaborating on research projects, contributing to the Institute’s working papers series, and formulating research proposals for external funding through the Institute.
  4. Expanding Networks: Broadening the South Asia Institute’s network across academia, practitioners, policymakers, and media.

This fellowship presents an exciting opportunity for Pakistani scholars to further their research and career prospects while contributing to the academic community at SOAS’s South Asia Institute.

Level of Study:

The SOAS Charles Wallace Pakistan Fellowship in the UK is open to Pakistani students and supports individuals pursuing programs at the Fellowship level at SOAS.

Subjects Offered:

This scholarship program covers a wide range of subjects, allowing students to study any field of their choice.

Scholarship Benefits:

The selected candidate will receive a financial assistance of £900 to cover visa fees and travel expenses, along with a monthly stipend of £1500. It’s important to note that the recipient will be responsible for arranging their own accommodation in London.

Who Can Apply:

This scholarship is open for application to students from Pakistan.

Who is Eligible:

  1. Nationality and Residence: Applicants must hold Pakistani nationality and currently reside in Pakistan at the time of application submission.
  2. Educational Background: Candidates should have successfully completed a PhD and be engaged in the fields of ‘Pakistan Studies’ within the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences disciplines, which are supported at SOAS.
  3. Research Focus: Preference will be given to applicants whose research aligns with modern and contemporary Pakistan, particularly within the thematic areas of the South Asia Institute (SSAI): Resources Under Pressure; Citizenship, Rights and Inequality; The Politics of Culture and Religion; Interactions and Interventions in the Arts; Lineages of Knowledge and Power.
  4. Study Restrictions: The Fellowship cannot be held for the purpose of enrolling in or alongside studies at any Higher Educational Institution in the United Kingdom, including SOAS.
  5. Career Stage: Applicants should be in the early to middle stages of their academic careers.
  6. English Proficiency: Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is necessary to actively engage in discussions and utilize resource materials.
  7. Other Funding: Applicants must declare if they are currently receiving or awaiting the results of other grants or applications. Failure to disclose this information could result in the withdrawal of the fellowship.
