Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship 2025
The Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship honors Alberta’s first Premier and Minister of Education, Alexander Rutherford, for his unwavering support of public education and the University of Alberta, as well as his contributions to community development.
Purpose
To reward the academic excellence of senior high school students and encourage them to pursue post-secondary education.
Scholarship Value
Up to $2,500.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Residency Requirements:
- Be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. (Note: Visa students are not eligible.)
- Be an Alberta resident:
- One parent/legal guardian must have maintained permanent residence in Canada for at least 12 months before the applicant starts their post-secondary studies.
- The applicant must have resided in Alberta for at least 12 consecutive months prior to commencing post-secondary education.
- Residency requirements must be met for the entire grade for which the scholarship is being awarded.
- Academic Requirements:
- Completed high school on or after September 30, 1980.
- Achieved a minimum combined average in five designated courses for at least one grade.
- Enrollment Requirements:
- Be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate post-secondary or apprenticeship program of at least one semester. (Note: Graduate and professional programs such as medicine, optometry, and veterinary medicine are not eligible.)
- Other Conditions:
- The scholarship is awarded only once.
Selection Criteria
Selection is based on the applicant’s academic performance:
- For Alberta Residents: Marks on the official Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement.
- For Non-Alberta High School Graduates: Marks on official transcripts from other provinces.

Rutherford Scholar Award

Eligibility Criteria
The top ten students, as determined on the first writing of Diploma Examinations, are recognized as Rutherford Scholars.
Application Process
Recipients are selected from applications for an Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. A separate application is not required.
Selection Process
Recipients are selected based on the first writing of Diploma Examinations from qualifying subjects. Qualifying subjects are:
One of:
- English Language Arts 30-1, 30-2, or
- Français 30-1
AND
- Social Studies 30-1 or 30-2
Plus any three other subjects:

- Mathematics 30-1, or 30-2
- French Language Arts 10-1
- Biology 30
- Chemistry 30
- Physics 30
- Science 30

Dr. Ernest and Minnie Mehl Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Mrs. Minnie Mehl through Alberta Student Aid. Mrs. Mehl wanted to help Alberta after many wonderful years as a teacher, wife and valued community member.

One award of $3,500
Eligibility Criteria
Students must be:
- a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada,
- an Alberta resident,
- have completed Grade 12 in Alberta at a school that follows the Alberta Education Curriculum, and
- must be continuing their studies at a degree granting post-secondary school in Canada.
Application Process
Recipients are selected from applications received for an Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. A separate application is not required.
Selection Process
Grade 12 high school students are ranked according to the same criteria as for the Rutherford Scholars as determined on the first writing of Diploma Examinations in the following courses:
- One of English Language Arts 30-1, 30-2, or
- Français 30-1
AND
- Social Studies 30, 30-1 or 30-2
Plus any three other subjects:
- Mathematics 30-1 or 30-2
- French Language Arts 10-1
- Biology 30
- Chemistry 30
- Physics 30 or
- Science 30
Mildred Rowe Weston Memorial Scholarship
Established by the estate of the late Mildred Rowe Weston.
Value
3 scholarships of $1,000 each
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada and Alberta residents;
- have completed at least three courses through the Alberta Distance Learning Centre (ADLC) as shown on an Alberta Education transcript with school code 0099; and
- be enrolled full-time at a designated post-secondary school.
Application Process
Students will automatically be considered for these awards when they apply for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. There is no separate application required for these awards.
Selection Process
Recipients will be selected based on their Grade 12 averages. The top three students will receive scholarships.

Application Process
- Apply Online: Once your official high school transcript is available and you are enrolled in a full-time post-secondary program.
Disbursement
Once your enrollment or attendance in your program is confirmed by your post-secondary institution, Alberta Student Aid will send your cheque within one month.
