The Duncan Norman Research Scholarship at the University of Liverpool was established in 2004 through a generous donation from The Duncan Norman Charitable Trust, honoring the late Duncan Norman. This prestigious scholarship supports exceptional postgraduate research students.
Scholarship Benefits
The Duncan Norman Research Scholarship offers the following comprehensive funding and research support:
- Annual Maintenance Stipend: £22,000 (or a top-up to this amount if the candidate has other funding).
- Tuition Fees: Full coverage for Home, EU, or Overseas students.
- Accommodation Support: Free University accommodation worth up to £4,635 per year or an equivalent allowance for off-campus living.
- Technology Support: Laptop or desktop computer valued up to £1,000.
- Conference Expenses: Up to £500 for Years 2 and 3.
Eligibility Criteria
The scholarship is open to all prospective full-time PhD students, regardless of nationality, tuition fee status, or subject area.
Important Requirements:
- Applicants should also seek funding from alternate sources for a postgraduate studentship. If successful, the Duncan Norman Scholarship will provide top-up funding.
- Scholarship recipients must:
- Register for a PhD at the University of Liverpool.
- Attend events organized by The Duncan Norman Charitable Trust in Liverpool.
Ineligibility:
- Prospective MRes students.
- Students at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, currently registered MPhil/PhD students, or off-site candidates.
- Applicants based at XJTLU.

- Applicants must hold a formal PhD offer from the University of Liverpool.
- Only students with a first-class honors degree (or equivalent) are likely to be considered.
