The AFS Global STEM Academies offer a unique opportunity for youth worldwide to enhance their STEM skills while focusing on sustainability and social innovation. This program combines both digital and in-person learning, bringing together scholars from 15 countries to develop critical global competencies, including problem-solving, analytical thinking, intercultural understanding, and social impact.

Program Overview: Blending Digital Learning with Real-World Experience

The AFS Global STEM Academies begin with a 12-week virtual curriculum, where scholars engage in e-learning from home. The virtual program covers topics such as global competence skills, sustainability, and social impact, with content co-developed by AFS and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Social Impact Strategy.

Virtual Learning Focus:

• Social Impact & Sustainability Workshops
• Student-Led Social Impact Projects
• Real-World Solutions for Climate Change & the Energy Transition

This virtual experience culminates in presentations by students, offering potential solutions to real-world challenges aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Immersive International Experience

After completing the virtual curriculum, scholars will participate in a 4-week immersive experience in one of four destinations: Brazil, China, Egypt, or India. The in-person programming focuses on developing critical STEM skills and intercultural understanding for global sustainability.

What to Expect During the Immersive Experience:

• Community service projects
• Visits to local sustainability-focused operations
• Intercultural learning and local cultural immersion

By visiting innovative companies and organizations, scholars gain hands-on insights into how STEM skills are applied to solve real-world sustainability challenges.

Certificate and Recognition

Upon successful completion of the program, scholars will receive the Advanced Certificate on Global Competence for Social Impact awarded by AFS and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Social Impact Strategy. This certificate recognizes the scholar’s proficiency in global competence and social impact, highlighting their dedication to sustainability and STEM.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, students must meet the following requirements:

• Nationality/Citizenship: Must be a legal resident or citizen of one of the following countries: Azerbaijan, Brazil, China, Egypt, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, United Kingdom, USA.
• Age: Must be between 15 to 17.5 years old at the start of the program.
• Language: Ability to participate fully in English.
• Interests: Passion for STEM, sustainability, and global competencies.
• Travel: Must be willing and able to travel abroad unaccompanied to one of the program destinations.
