The Canon Collins Trust, in partnership with the Sol Plaatje Educational Project, is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarships for the year 2024 in South Africa. These scholarships are specifically designed for individuals pursuing Master’s and PhD degrees.
Under this collaboration, the Sol Plaatje Educational Project and the Canon Collins Trust have committed to providing financial support for a duration of up to two years for Master’s degree students and up to three years for PhD candidates. The continuation of funding is contingent upon the recipients’ demonstrated satisfactory progress and the submission of positive academic reports.

Scholarship Details:
Interdisciplinary courses and doctoral studies can sometimes challenge traditional categorization. Applicants are encouraged to exercise their discretion when deciding whether to apply. However, it’s important to note that applications that unmistakably fall outside of these areas, such as MBAs, medical sciences, sports sciences, and applied sciences, will not be considered for scholarships.
In the upcoming year, 2024, there will be a particular emphasis on climate justice. Scholarship applications related to climate justice may encompass scientific or applied science disciplines as long as the application convincingly illustrates its relevance to matters pertaining to climate justice.
Eligibility Criteria:
To qualify for the Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarships, candidates are required to fulfill the following criteria:
- Citizenship: Applicants must be citizens of, or hold refugee status in, one of the following countries: Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe.
- Residency: Applicants should typically reside in one of the aforementioned countries.
- Academic Qualifications: Candidates must hold a strong undergraduate degree (at least a minimum of second class, upper division, or its equivalent), or they should be on the verge of completing their undergraduate studies in the year of application.
- University Enrollment: Applicants should either be currently enrolled in a South African university or in the process of applying to study at one.
Eligible Courses:
For the year 2024, scholarships will exclusively be granted to individuals pursuing studies in the following three fields:
- Justice, encompassing Climate Justice, Law, Economics, and Politics.
- Education policy and practice.
- Humanities, spanning Literature, History, Anthropology, and the Arts.
