Hong Kong University Summer Research Programme 2025
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Summer Research Programme 2025 is a 10-week intensive research training opportunity, offering networking and extracurricular activities for top students worldwide who are interested in pursuing postgraduate research studies at HKU.
Benefits for Participants
- One-on-one Mentorship with a Distinguished Professor
Successful applicants will be mentored by a prominent professor at HKU to develop and conduct a research project. The Programme office will help participants find a suitable mentor based on their research interests and preferences. - Scholarship for Participants
Participants will receive a scholarship of HK$10,000 upon completing the Programme successfully. - Financial Support
Financial assistance includes reimbursement for airfare (up to HK$5,000) and university accommodation (up to HK$5,000).
(Note: Students residing or studying in Hong Kong are only eligible for university accommodation support.) - Prizes and Awards
Top-performing participants will be eligible for various prizes and awards. - Conditional Offer for HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship
A select number of high-achieving participants with excellent academic backgrounds may receive a conditional offer for the prestigious HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship, which includes substantial financial support for PhD studies at HKU.

Participant Selection
- Target Participants
Outstanding undergraduate students in their 3rd or 4th year with a CGPA of 3.6 or higher (or equivalent).
Outstanding Master’s students with a Bachelor’s degree in First-Class Honours (or equivalent). - Selection Criteria
- Exceptional academic performance
- Strong interest in research postgraduate studies
- Research experience
- Interest in interdisciplinary studies
- High English proficiency
- Maturity and independence
Proposed Faculty, Department, Field of Study, and Mentorship
Each participant will be affiliated with an academic unit and mentored by a professor. Applicants should indicate their proposed faculty/department and field of study in the application based on their research interests. A list of faculties, schools, departments, and interdisciplinary research areas can be found here. You are encouraged to propose potential mentors in your application.
Online Application Details
The online application system opens from January 2, 2025 (10 AM HK Time) to February 3, 2025 (5 PM HK Time). A non-refundable application fee of HK$300 applies.

- Personal and academic details
- Proposed faculty, department, field of study, and mentor(s)
- Personal statement (300-500 words) explaining your motivation for applying, what you hope to gain, your career goals, and interest in the Programme
- Research interest (100-200 words) outlining your research topics and areas of focus
- Supporting documents:
- Passport-sized photo
- CV highlighting academic achievements, research experience, and professional credentials
- Latest transcripts and certificates from your Bachelor’s and/or Master’s programmes
- English proficiency test results (if applicable)

- Application Period: January 2, 2025 (10 AM HKT) – February 3, 2025 (5 PM HKT)
- Selection: February to mid-March 2025
- Announcement of Results: Mid-March 2025
- Visa Application (for non-local students): Mid-March to mid-April 2025
- Summer Research Programme at HKU: June 2 – August 8, 2025
(Note: Weeks 1-2 of the Programme (June 2–15, 2025) can be conducted online. All participants must attend in person from Week 3 onwards (June 16 – August 8, 2025).)

Yes, outstanding Year 2 students with excellent academic achievement or significant research experience are encouraged to apply. - Q2: What if I haven’t taken the English proficiency test yet?
You can still apply, but English proficiency will be considered during the selection process. - Q3: My transcript won’t be ready by the application deadline. What should I do?

Applicants are advised to submit all documents before the deadline as applications will be reviewed immediately after submission. - Q6: Will there be selection interviews?
Selection interviews, if necessary, will be arranged by the relevant faculty/department. - Q7: Are university accommodations guaranteed?
University accommodation is available at a discounted rate, though participants cannot choose their accommodation hall.

Students without the right of abode in Hong Kong must apply for a student visa. Details on the visa application process will be provided to successful applicants.
