Degree Level
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) is available for:
- Master’s programs (excluding specific programs as noted).
Available Subjects
The scholarship is open to all Master’s degree programs, except:
- Faculty of Humanities programs.
- Non-advanced LLMs and MSc programs at Leiden Law School.
Benefits of the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS)
Scholarship Amount and Levels
The LExS offers partial tuition fee awards to support outstanding students. These scholarships are non-negotiable and available in the following amounts:
- €10,000
- €15,000
- €17,500
- €18,500
- €19,000
While the scholarship covers a portion of the tuition fees, recipients must demonstrate additional financial resources to cover their visa requirements and living expenses.
Eligible Nationalities
- Open to international students from non-EEA/non-EFTA countries.
- Students eligible for Dutch government financial aid are not eligible.
- Exceptions:

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS), applicants must:
- Be among the top 10% of graduates in their previous academic program.
- Note: Proof of ranking is not required, but this criterion highlights the scholarship’s competitiveness.
Application Procedure
Follow these steps to apply for the LExS:
1. Apply for Admission
- Submit your application for a full-time Master’s program at Leiden University.
- Pay the required application fee.
2. Access the Scholarship Application
- Once your program application is submitted, access the LExS scholarship section through your online application portal.
3. Submit a Motivation Letter
- Upload a compelling motivation letter (maximum 500 words) addressing:
- Your qualifications.
- Why you deserve the scholarship.
4. Meet the Deadline
- Deadline: February 1, 2024, for programs starting in September 2025.
- Late applications will not be considered.
