The primary objective of the National Institute of Genetics (referred to as “NIG”) is to recruit talented young researchers as NIG postdoctoral research fellows (referred to as “NIG postdocs”) and involve them in research activities at the institute for a specific duration. The aim is to advance research at NIG and nurture researchers with exceptional research capabilities.

Established in 1949 by the Ministry of Education, the National Institute of Genetics (NIG) focuses on comprehensive and applied studies in genetics, including theoretical and fundamental research, as well as the instruction and promotion of genetic science.

Program Period:

The employment duration is a maximum of 3 years starting from the initial date of hire, and reappointment is done annually.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the NIG Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Institute of Genetics in Japan, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Required Language: English
  • Eligible Countries: All World Countries
  • Possess sufficient research skills to pursue genetics research projects.
  • Hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) or expect to obtain it before the date of arrival at the post.
  • Individuals who have previously been enrolled at NIG as of March 31, 2023, are not eligible to apply. This includes current/former postdocs, technical staff at NIG, or graduate students at the Department of Genetics, SOKENDAI. Temporal visits, such as internships, are not considered.
  • NIG postdocs are expected to actively contribute to the advancement of research at NIG as a whole. This includes active participation in NIG Poster Sessions, NIG Retreats, and NIG colloquia. Research plans that require long-term stays at institutes/universities outside of NIG are generally not accepted.
  • At the end of the employment period, NIG postdocs are required to present their achievements at the NIG colloquium.
  • Publications resulting from the research must acknowledge the support received from the NIG postdoc grant.

  • Applications should be filled out in either Japanese or English.
  • Format 2 and 4 allow for the insertion of figures and the use of color.
  • Do not modify the layout, size (A4), or number of pages.
  • Include 2 reference letters from your supervisor and the host PI.
