University of Southampton Merit Scholarships for International Undergraduates
The University of Southampton offers merit scholarships to international undergraduate students. These scholarships provide up to £3,000 off the first year of tuition fees for eligible programs.
Eligible Scholarships
Merit scholarships are available for the following schools:
- Biological Sciences Undergraduate International Scholarship
- Business School Undergraduate International Scholarship
- Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Undergraduate International Scholarship
- Economic, Social and Political Sciences Undergraduate International Scholarship
- Education School Undergraduate International Scholarship
- Geography and Environmental Science Undergraduate International Scholarship
- Health Sciences Undergraduate International Scholarship
- Law School Undergraduate International Scholarship
- School of Mathematical Sciences Undergraduate International Scholarship
- Ocean and Earth Science Undergraduate International Scholarship
- Physics and Astronomy Undergraduate International Scholarship
- Psychology Undergraduate International Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the merit scholarships, you must:
- Pay overseas tuition fees.
- Hold a conditional or unconditional offer for an eligible undergraduate course.
- Be starting in Year 1 of an eligible program.
Additional Eligibility Requirements
Eligibility criteria vary depending on the specific school offering your course:
For Business, Law, or Physics and Astronomy
- Exceed your offer and achieve either:
- An A grade* at A level.
- A grade 7 at Higher level in the International Baccalaureate (IB).
- Equivalent qualifications.
For Chemistry, Economic, Social and Political Sciences, Education, or Maths
- Exceed your offer and achieve either:
- An A or A* grade at A level.
- A grade 7 at Higher level in the IB.
- Equivalent qualifications.
For All Other Schools
- Achieve either:
- An A or A* grade at A level.
- A grade 6 or 7 at Higher level in the IB.
- Equivalent qualifications.
Students Not Eligible
The scholarships are not available to students:
- Enrolled in PGCert, PGDip, Foundation, or postgraduate research (PGR) courses.
- Studying via distance learning.
- Studying at the university’s Malaysia campus.
- In partnership programs with other institutions.
- Enrolled only in pre-sessional English courses (exceptions apply if progressing to an undergraduate program).
- On continuing professional development (CPD) courses.
Scholarship Awards
1. Chemistry, Economic, Social and Political Sciences, Education, or Maths
- Receive £1,000 for each A or A* grade above the standard offer.
Example:
- If your offer requires A, B, B and you achieve A, A, B*, you will receive £2,000.
2. Business, Law, or Physics and Astronomy
- Receive £1,000 for each A* grade above the standard offer.
Example:
- If your offer requires A, A, B and you achieve A, A, A*, you will receive £1,000.
3. Health Sciences
- Receive £1,000 for each A or A* grade for the following courses:
- BSc Midwifery
- MNurs Nursing (Adult and Child)
- MNurs Nursing (Adult and Mental Health)
- BSc Nursing (Adult)
- MNurs Nursing (Child and Mental Health)
- BSc Nursing (Child)
- BSc Nursing (Mental Health)
4. All Other Schools
- Receive £1,000 for each A or A* grade for courses in:
- Biological Sciences
- Geography and Environmental Science
- Ocean and Earth Science
- Psychology
Conditions
- The maximum award is £3,000, applicable only to the first year of tuition fees.
- Scholarships are automatically awarded—no application is required.
Notification
Eligible students will be informed of their scholarship via email.
