Applications are currently being accepted for the WITS-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab Scholarships for sub-Saharan African Nationals for the year 2023. This scholarship opportunity stems from a collaborative agreement between the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and the Technische Universität Berlin (TUB).
The primary aim of the Wits-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab Programme is to provide an avenue for scholars from various countries in sub-Saharan Africa to participate in the Master of Urban Studies program in the field of Urban Management at Wits. Additionally, successful applicants will have the opportunity to pursue doctoral studies at both Wits and UNILAG. Notably, the program will introduce a new Master’s degree in urban management at UNILAG in 2021, supported by bursaries provided by the WITS-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab Programme.

Scholarship Details:
In addition to the collaborative efforts centered around the urban management master’s programs at TUB, Wits, and UNILAG, the program aims to foster the international exchange of ideas among research institutions and enhance the network of urban academics across Africa.
Through a competitive selection process, four fully funded PhD scholarships will be granted, with two scholarships awarded to South African candidates and the remaining two scholarships open to candidates from other sub-Saharan African countries. These recipients will commence their studies at the University of the Witwatersrand in February 2022, collaborating with the Technical University Berlin and the University of Lagos. The selected PhD candidates will receive funding for a duration of four years, spanning from 2022 to 2025.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the WITS-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab Scholarships, applicants are required to meet the following criteria:
- Applicants must be sub-Saharan African nationals.
- Applicants should be enrolling in master’s or PhD programs.
- Applicants must be willing to undertake a full-time program.
- Applicants should be prepared to participate in the Master of Urban Studies program in the field of Urban Management at Wits, as well as pursue PhD studies at both Wits and UNILAG.
