Elsie and Daphne Kirkpatrick, the daughters of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Kirkpatrick, established scholarships in honor of their father. These scholarships were designed to encourage and promote the study of ophthalmology, a field that their father was deeply passionate about. Lieutenant Colonel Kirkpatrick had a distinguished career in the Indian Medical Service, during which he worked in various hospitals such as the General Hospital in Madras and the Government Ophthalmic Hospital. He was instrumental in developing teaching and postgraduate training in pathology and ophthalmology in these institutions. After retiring from the Madras hospital, he worked as an ophthalmic surgeon at the Tropical Diseases Hospital and taught ophthalmology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
