The IMB International PhD Program for the 2023-2024 academic year offers fully funded scholarships to international students. This program provides financial support for accommodation and travel expenses.

The IMB International PhD Program is open to international students who wish to pursue their PhD degree in Mainz, Germany. This program, known as the International PhD Program (IPP), offers a unique opportunity for talented and enthusiastic learners to engage in cutting-edge research in the field of contemporary biology. The program focuses on addressing significant issues related to Gene Regulation, Epigenetics, and Genome Stability.

Our participating organizations encompass a broad range of expertise in biochemistry, genetics, cellular and developmental biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, and applied physics. Within our program, you will have the chance to explore various techniques, including CRISPR/Cas, NGS (Next-Generation Sequencing), gene network modeling, mass spectrometry, and super-resolution microscopy.

The program is coordinated by the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB), a renowned center of excellence in life sciences that was recently established. Additionally, our collaborating institutions include Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) and the University Medical Centre (UMC).

Eligibility Criteria:

Information required for application:

  • Required Language: English
  • Eligible Countries: All World Countries
  • Details of your degrees (BSc, MSc).
  • Details of any other post-graduate degrees, awards, honors, or distinctions (description with a maximum of 250 words).
  • Details on research stay abroad during studies (if any).
  • Details of past research experiences.
  • A list of your publications (PubMed format, maximum of 300 words) and your conference contributions (title of presentation, date and location of the conference).
  • Which groups you are interested in working with; up to 5 may be selected. Please note: not all groups offer projects in every call.
  • A motivational statement describing your interest in the IPP and your chosen groups as well as your scientific goals (maximum of 300 words).

You will need to upload the following documents in PDF format:

  • Curriculum vitae (maximum size 3 MB).
  • A single file (maximum size 4 MB) containing:
    • University studies completed so far, including certificates of qualification and transcripts of records.
    • English language test certificate (not mandatory, only if available).
    • High school certificate (if available).

How to Apply:

To avail this scholarship, please follow the important instructions below:

  • Online registration: Register online by providing your contact details and the details of at least two referees. The referees should be senior scientists, such as group leaders or professors at a university or research institute, who are familiar with your work.
  • Online application form: After registering, you will receive an email with a link to your personalized online application form. The email will also contain a guideline on how to apply. It is recommended to read the guideline before filling out the application form. Please note that the application form cannot be saved, so it is advisable to prepare the necessary information in advance. You can copy and paste texts into the form as needed. The application must be completed in English.
  • Interview Days:

A total of 25-30 shortlisted students will be selected and invited to Mainz for interviews, scheduled to take place from June 24th to June 26th, 2021. The interview process will span three days and involve presentations by Group Leaders and applicants, as well as in-depth interviews within the group(s) the applicants are interested in. The IMB International PhD Program (IPP) covers all expenses related to accommodation and travel, including intercontinental travel, for the selected candidates.
