Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin (HTW Berlin), the largest university of applied sciences in Berlin, offers an 18-month full-time Master’s degree course in “International and Development Economics” (MIDE), exclusively taught in English. This program targets students from developing and transitioning countries, along with applicants from Germany and other developed nations, interested in understanding the economic challenges faced by “third world” countries. The program’s objective is to equip students for careers in fields related to global economic affairs and development.

Program Curriculum:

The Master’s program in International and Development Economics caters to students with a background in economics/business administration or other social sciences with an economic focus. It aims to enhance understanding of development economics, the global economic landscape influencing socio-economic development, and crucial sectors and policy domains vital for developing nations, including agriculture, financial institutions, and public enterprises. The curriculum covers fundamental theoretical discussions as well as contemporary examples of strategies, policies, and projects to grasp the complexities of current development policies.

The DAAD aids in educating professionals from developing and newly industrialized nations through its postgraduate programs with a development focus. Locally trained experts with international connections play a pivotal role in fostering sustainable development in their countries. These professionals are instrumental in striving for a future marked by reduced poverty and enhanced education and healthcare for all. The scholarships cater to foreign graduates from developing and newly industrialized countries, irrespective of their field, who possess at least two years of professional experience. These scholarships offer the opportunity to pursue postgraduate or Master’s degrees at German universities recognized by the state. In exceptional cases, doctoral degrees may also be granted, enabling individuals to obtain a university qualification (Master’s/PhD) in Germany.

Degree Level:

The DAAD-EPOS Scholarships for Developing Countries – MIDE 2024-2025 in Germany are available for Master’s level programs at Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin – HTW Berlin.

Available Subjects:

The scholarship supports studies in the following subjects:

  • International Development Studies
  • Economics

Scholarship Benefits:

  • Duration: The funding duration varies from 12 to 42 months, depending on the study program.
  • Value: Depending on the academic level, recipients receive monthly payments of 934 euros for graduates or 1,200 euros for doctoral candidates. Additionally, the scholarship covers payments towards health, accident, and personal liability insurance. It also provides a travel allowance unless covered by the home country or another funding source.

Under certain circumstances, scholarship holders may receive the following additional benefits:

  • Monthly rent subsidy
  • Monthly allowance for accompanying family members

Eligible Nationalities:

Graduates with a minimum of two years’ professional experience from the following countries are eligible to apply: List of eligible countries.

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates must meet the following criteria to be eligible:

  • Fulfillment of necessary academic requirements, with the capability to successfully complete a study program in Germany (demonstrating above-average results in the first academic exam and exhibiting top performance third, along with language proficiency).
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree (typically a four-year course) in a relevant subject.
  • Accumulation of at least two years of professional experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate motivation towards development-related goals, coupled with an expectation to undertake social responsibility and initiate/support processes of change in personal and professional environments post-training/scholarship.

The application deadline for the program starting in April of the following year is as follows:

  • Application deadline: September 30 (August 31 for applications with DAAD scholarship) each year.
