Eligibility Criteria:

To be considered for the ADB–Japan Scholarship Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Citizenship: Candidates must be citizens of an ADB borrowing member country and also qualify for the Japanese ODA scholarship.
  2. Dual Citizenship: Holding dual citizenship in any developed country is not permissible.
  3. Admission: Applicants need to secure admission to an approved master’s program at a Designated Institution.
  4. Educational Qualification: Candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with an outstanding academic performance.
  5. Professional Experience: A minimum of two years of full-time professional work experience post obtaining a university degree is required at the time of application. Proficiency in oral and written English communication skills is essential for successful academic pursuits.
  6. Age Limit: Applicants should not exceed 35 years at the time of application, except in special cases endorsed by the Government of Japan.
  7. Health and Commitment: Candidates must be in good health and commit to returning to and working in their home country for a minimum of two years following the completion of the program to contribute to its development.
  8. Relationship and Employment: Applicants must not hold positions or be closely related by blood or adoption (spouse, parent, sibling, child, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew) to Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management, staff, or consultants of ADB. They should also not be staff at ADB–JSP Designated Institutions or be residing or employed in a country other than their home nation. Additionally, they should not already be enrolled in graduate degree programs.

Application Procedure:

  1. Request Information and Application Forms:
    • Contact your chosen partner institution to obtain information and application forms.
  2. Complete Required Documents:
    • Fill out all necessary application documents, including the ADB-JSP information sheet.
  3. Submit Documents to the Institution:
    • Send the completed application documents to the designated institution.
  4. Institution Evaluation:
    • The institution will evaluate and make decisions regarding admission and applicants.
  5. Shortlist Submission to ADB:
    • The institution will submit a shortlist of candidates to the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
  6. ADB Review:
    • ADB reviews the submissions received from institutions.
  7. Recommendation to Japanese Executive Director:
    • ADB recommends awardees to the Japanese Executive Director for approval, based on specified selection criteria.
  8. Scholar Selection and Notification:
    • ADB selects scholars and notifies the institution.
  9. Institution Notification to Scholars:
    • The institution informs all scholars about their application status.
